What's A Tune-Up?
A Tune-Up, also known as General Service, involves: opening the machine, cleaning the machine, lubricating the machine, checking the pivot points and cam areas, checking the gears, checking the operations and alignments of assemblies, checking the motor, checking the belts, and the belt tensions, checking the condition of the sewing hook, replacing the sewing needle, checking the needle bar center left to right, checking the needle bar center front to back, checking the needle bar height, checking the sewing hook timing, checking the needle bar zig-zag timing, checking the condition of the feed dog, checking the feed dog timing, checking the needle plate, checking the presser foot, checking the control areas, checking default settings and calibrations (electronic machines), checking housings, checking the bobbin winder assembly, checking the bobbin case, checking the thread guides, checking the bobbin thread tension, checking the needle thread tension, checking the performance of the foot control, performing a sewing test. A Tune-Up also involves making any corrections to the various settings and adjustments in the areas just mentioned. All of this work is done for a set price. Tune-Ups for overlock machines are done on a similar basis, but are somewhat more complex due to having more than one needle, more than one hook (aka “Looper”), and more than two threads.
